Equal Pay

There are two types of equal pay disputes:

  1. Your work is the same or very similar to that done by your ‘comparator’;
  2. You do different work, but consider that the value of your work is equal to that done by your ‘comparator’.

A comparator is a person who is being paid more than you.

Under the Equal Pay Act 1970, you can only claim if your ‘comparator’ is of the opposite sex. Women need a male comparator; men need a female comparator. You must also have raised a formal written grievance. Please see also our section on Grievances (tab at top of page).

You may benefit from being represented in your claim, as there are many complexities in this type of claim.
